This series captures the Nevada Northern Railway as it stood in the 1980s and 1990s, revealing the untold story of a historic western mining railroad during its quiet, forgotten years. Photographer Charles W. Case completed twenty trips to the East Ely area in Nevada during this time, traveling from one end of the rail line to the other. He made the negatives of these images with a tripod-mounted Hasselblad 500C/M camera using 50mm and 80mm Zeiss lenses.
His visits to East Ely, Nevada, gave Case an opportunity to use photographs to show the remoteness, solitude, hard work, and danger that came with a western mining railroad. For Case, the miles of desolate track were just as interesting as the old steam locomotives.
His photographs offer a look at the brief time when the Nevada Northern Railway sat unused and abandoned, reminding us of other boom towns and mining structures left to be forgotten by history.
